General News Ndoums GN Bank to suspend Division one sponsorship over indiscipline
MAY 30, 2016 LISTEN

The 2012 Presidential candidate of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has directed managers of one of his businesses, specifically, GN Bank, to suspend its sponsorship of the Division One League.

The CEO of Groupe Nduom announced that he Bank will temporarily cease its sponsorship of the second-tier of Ghanaian football “when it reaches the mid-point of the current schedule of matches” following incidents of indiscipline and violence directed at his team Elmina Sharks, and at other venues across the league.

Dr. Nduom was pelted with stones back in August in Elmina, during a match between the Sharks and Dwarfs.

Nduom posted on his official Facebook page at the time that, some fans “broke through the perimeter fence” but were restrained by the police.

He also suggested that they would consider withdrawing the sponsorship should such misbehavior continue.

And it appears that the PPP founder has followed through with his threat.

According to the statement from Dr. Nduom, GN Bank “cannot be associated with the indiscipline, intimidation of opponents and wanton disregard for human life and valuable property being displayed by team officials and their supporters across the Division One League.”

“Yesterday [Sunday], the coach of Elmina Sharks FC was beaten mercilessly and could have been killed by supporters of opposing teams in Sekondi. Players and officials have gone through similar incidents in Bibiani and other League venues,” the statement said.

Dr. Nduom called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to address the issues in the league “or the suspension will turn into complete stoppage of sponsorship.”

“We need discipline in football just as we need it in our national life. We will not condone or reward illegality and indiscipline. We cannot achieve excellence without discipline.”
