The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has warned of dire consequences on residents and properties if there is flooding in the Tema Community 5.

Estimating the extent of damage, the national disaster organization said at least over seven thousand lives would be at stake in the event of a flood.

Speaking to Joy News, Tema NADMO Coordinator, Hadjia Zenab Abdullah said the danger has come about because of human activities.

She disclosed “It is individuals or companies who are busy filling the lagoon which is supposed to contain the water coming from the up-streams and the community.”

Explaining further, Hadjia Abdullah said due to the nature of construction of homes, it becomes difficult for rain water to stay in those homes.

As a result, she added, the rain water has to find its way into the lagoon which is now being blocked.

“How can the water be expected to gather and settle down in the lagoon whilst we do everything to block it?” she bemoaned.

On his part, the Chief Executive of Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), Isaac Ashai Odamtey said the practice has come to the attention of the Assembly.

He explained because lives are involved, the Assembly has began mapping the area to identify those individuals and companies encroaching on the lagoon.

“We are very very concerned. We are concerned for two reasons. One the fact that human lives are at stake in this exercise,” he said.

A resident who also spoke to Joy News said “when it rains, hardly can you see anything. Not even the structures around.”

He appealed for a collaborative effort between the TMA and NADMO to arrest the situation.
