Worawora Hospital Reduces Neonatal Deaths With ‘Approtech’

The Worawora Government Hospital has reduced neonatal deaths from 15 to four in 12 months through the use of an improvised wooden radiant warmer as an incubator.

The radiant warmer produces blue and white lights to give warmth to premature babies and help reduce the incidence of jaundice in the babies.

Dr Isaac Secorm, medical superintendent of the hospital, said this when LMI Holdings, a civil engineering and a large scale infrastructure development company, presented baby incubators and infant warmer with other medical items to the hospital on Friday.

The other items include blood band, patient monitor, oxygen concentrator, laboratory incubator, water bath, baby scale, patient trolleys and wheel chairs.

Dr Secorm expressed gratitude to the company, saying the items came at the right time when the facility is struggling with makeshift equipment to save lives.

He said in terms of equipment, the accident and emergency ward, for instance, was virtually empty with nurses checking patients' vital signs manually.

Dr Secorm said the hospital's 65-year-old theatre was also leaking and appealed for support to renovate the theatre.

Ama Lawson, the head of corporate affairs, LMI Holdings, said the presentation estimated at GH¢100,000 followed an appeal made by Nana Owusu Afari, the Nkosuohene of Worawora.

She said supporting healthcare delivery was part of the company's core values and expressed joy that the items would help the hospital deliver quality healthcare services to its clients.

The Ghana News Agency learnt that the hospital receives cases from Kete-Krachi, Dambai, Nkwanta, Nkonya and Jasikan.
