The documents presented to the police by Richlove Paintsil, wife of former Ghanaian international John Paintsil, to buttress her allegation that her husband had stolen her car were forged, the footballer’s sister, Tina Paintsil has said.
“He was invited to the police station and according to the information I have, the police said he did not come with the car, so he will not be allowed to leave the police station. John presented the original documents of the car, which he bought, but when he went to the station, he saw that the wife had presented another forged document bearing his name that he has transferred the car to her, which he said was a lie,” she noted.
The footballer is alleged to have punched DSP Basintale of the East Legon Police Station in the face during interrogation after his wife had reported him to the police on Tuesday May 24 over the alleged larceny.
According to her, his brother told the police to keep both documents so that he will bring the car the next day because it was almost late in the evening when he presented himself to the police after he was invited.
She further explained in an interview on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM Thursday May 26, that: “All the cars in the [couple’s] house belong to John Paintsil”.
“The said car belongs to my brother. He bought it with his own money on his birthday and that is not the only car he has. He had a white Infinity; the wife hid the car and told the husband the car was missing. She only returned the car after John had reported the car missing. She sold the car later, after her husband had left the country,” she said.
“After John handed over the document to the police officers, he decided to leave and come back with the car the next day, but the officer held his shirt to prevent him from leaving. John only pulled himself free; he did not assault the officer, and he was detained by the police because he did not report to the station with the car,” she told host Chief Jerry Forson on the programme.
John Paintsil is to be arraigned before court on Thursday May 26.
Afia Tenge, PRO of the Accra Regional Police Command said Paintsil will be charged with “stealing, causing harm, assault, and offensive conduct on a police officer”.
