Adjei Kojo residents protest against new ECG meters

Residents of Adjei Kojo near Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region are protesting against the Electricity Company of Ghana for attempting to change their billing meters.

According the residents, ECG has not billed them for the power used over the past the five years.

The residents of the area rallied to prevent ECG personnel who went to the community to change their meters.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show, a resident of the area, Francis Yambah explained that the entire area has no ECG outlet where they can make payments and they are demanding that a customer care centre be opened before they are allowed to install the new metres.

“There is no ECG outlet around for make payment. We said we need a customer care post around because when you exhaust your credit you can't get some to buy unless you go to Community 11. And if I have a problem in the evening I can't go to Community 11 because they would have closed by then,” he lamented.

Mr. Yambah said they had asked the ECG personnel maintain the old metering system and provide them with monthly bills but that has not been adhered to for the past four years.

“About three to four years down, they've failed to install those meters. One funny thing is that, they said if they remove one meter and fix a prepaid meter for us, he will take GHc13. So the contractor gets GHc13 for replacing one meter. Why should we Ghanaians suffer for this?”

He listed some of the affected areas as: “Sun City, Adjei Kojo, towards Promise land, Solomon City, we are a lot. The whole of these areas, there is nobody who is getting a bill.”
