The Lebanese community in Ghana has extended its educational scholarship scheme to the Central and Northern belts of the country.
The latest group to benefit from the gesture are twenty-one students in various tertiary, senior high and basic levels in the regions.
Speaking at a ceremony held at the Lebanese Embassy in Accra on Monday, to award beneficiaries, the Lebanese Ambassador Ali Halabi noted that “nothing beats the fulfillment that comes from knowing that your quota has pushed another person to attain greater heights and for us, that is the essence of life.”
He added that the relationship between his people and Ghanaians has been mutual, hence the need to invest in the future nation builders of this country as a show of appreciation.
“My people have been in Ghana for centuries. We have built life-long relationships with the Ghanaian people, some of us even consider ourselves Ghanaians, and this is our way of saying thank you for accommodating us throughout the period.
“We will continue to render our support in whichever form whenever, wherever,” he posited.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hanna Tetteh lauded the efforts of the Lebanese community in making quality education accessible to underprivileged students in the country.
She assured the business community in Ghana that government was taking steps to stabilise the economy and provide a healthy climate for commerce.
“We are aware of the current challenges facing the business community especially the unstable power situation. I would like to assure you that government is working hard to resolve them to boost business.”
She urged the students to take advantage of the scholarship and work hard to help others as well.
Mark Woyongo, Minister of State, encouraged other nationalities to emulate the gesture of the Lebanese community and contribute to national development.
“Education is key to every country's development and we hope that other nationals in the country will follow their footsteps” he said.
