The 2016 Flagbearer of the  opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has expressed optimism about the ability of Ghanaians to rise above the challenges of poverty and underdevelopment.

Nana Addo contends that the resilience of the Ghanaian people coupled with their potentials can be turned into prosperity for all to enjoy.

The NPP flagbearer made the remark at a lecture to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the death of the late renowned Ghanaian historian and politician, Professor Albert Adu-Boahen.

“…Fundamental trait of that life which I wholeheartedly share is prof. Adu-Boahen's incurable optimism of the potential of Ghana and her people. That above all, is what drove him. It takes that optimism that says to me that despite the skepticism, we are going to achieve something unique in modern history. Successfully, generating the growth and prosperity of our nation; the transition from poverty to wealth on the basis of free democratic institutions and universal adult suffrage,” he added.

Nana Addo joined some Ghanaians at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra on Tuesday, to pay tribute to the late Professor Albert Adu-Boahen, who died on May 24, 2006.

Albert Adu-Boahen, a renowned history professor, led the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as its presidential nominee in the 1992 elections.

The 10th anniversary lecture was organised by the Adu-Boahen Foundation in collaboration with some stakeholders and the family of the late academic and politician, who contributed significantly to Ghana's development in education and democracy.

79-year old Veteran journalist, Cameron Duodo, delivered the keynote address acknowledging the role the late Professor, who was his personal friend, played in harnessing Ghana's democracy.
