The Majority Chief Whip Alhaji Mubarak Muntaka has revealed that members of parliament are under pressure from their constituents who are seeking to enter the Police service.

According to him, potential recruits are besieging the homes of their MPs to facilitate their recruitment into the service.

Speaking at an event organised by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD), the Asawase MP said most Ghanaians put pressure on their members of parliament because they lack the understanding of the role of legislators.

“The smallest constituency that we have in this country is about 5000 people. And even 5000, is it possible to meet the needs of 5000 individuals? It is not possible.

“...Constitutionally, I am in parliament because of some reasons; am I able to play oversight? For example you want me to be able to get development for you and I should also be able to meet your individual needs?...

"The Police recruitment is on and come and see the number of people who are running to our homes to help,” he said.

He, however, believes MPs have a role to play in educating the electorates on their role as lawmakers.

“I think that we have a responsibility of segregating what is expected and also help the electorates to concentrate on what the functions are and not what the individual is expecting”.
