A forty-two-year-old taxi driver lost his life in a car crash on the Gomoa-Fetteh Kakraba stretch of the Winneba - Kasoa Highway in the Central Region.

Samuel Kobe died on the spot after a head-on collision with a Mercedes Benz Sprinter at about 6:30am on Friday, the Awutu Breku District Police Commander, ASP Samuel Amfo has said.

The accident was said to have happened when the driver of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus tried to overtake another vehicle and crashed into the Kia pride taxi.

The taxi, with registration number GW-9445-X had three passengers on board and was heading to Accra while the Sprinter with registration number GR-4816-16 had 18 passengers on board and headed towards Takoradi.

ASP Samuel Amfo told Adom News' Kofi Adjei all the passengers except one, sustained injuries with five of them being in critical condition but the taxi driver died instantly.

"His body has been deposited at the Swedru Government Hospital morgue and some of the passengers are responding to treatment at the same hospital," ASP Amfo indicated.

Some of the injured were rushed to St. Gregory Hospital at Budumburam in Kasoa, according to Kofi Adjei.

An eyewitness said the Sprinter driver ignored several warnings by other drivers.

I heard someone telling him to slow down at Mallam Junction but he assaulted him verbally and sped off. I also warned him since we were both going the same direction but he did not pay heed, a driver recounted i his local language, Twi.

Several deaths have been recorded on the Winneba - Cape Coast Highway in the past due to reckless driving.
