Accra, May 17, GNA - Mr Jeffrey Witte, the Executive Director and Founder of Amend, a non-governmental organisation, has called on stakeholders to help implement the '3-Es' namely; Education, Engineering and Enforcement to ensure safety on the road.

He said civil society organisations and the private sector should continue to play the leading role in the execution of the 3-Es to save the lives of the citizenry, especially school children from road traffic casualties.

He said the 3-Es entails organising educational programmes on road safety in the schools and communities, ensuring the appropriate road safety infrastructure by engineers while the law enforcement agencies enforce the road safety laws to the letter.

Mr Witte made the call at the launch of a Child Road Safety Campaign for schools in Ghana at the St Joseph Anglican School at Bubiashie in Accra.

The campaign was launched in collaboration with the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), the Vision for Alternative Development, PUMA Energy Foundation and PUMA Energy Ghana.

Mr Witte said about 120 million people died annually in Africa due to road accidents and described the situation as scary.

'However, in Ghana, I see commitment from every single aspect of society from the Government, communities, the police, the NRSC, parents and everyone in ensuring progress in the 3-Es to save the lives of the people.

'I can tell you this is not happening in every country in Africa and that shows the seriousness of Ghana in ensuring road safety,' he said.

Mr Witte said Ghana had a special place in Africa in road safety with the composition of the song; 'Seen and be Seen before You Cross the Road,' about 10 years ago by Ghanaian school children.

The Amend works in road safety in different countries across Africa and has three offices in Africa.

Mr David Adonteng, the Head of Planning and Monitoring, NRSC, said children were the most vulnerable road users and, therefore, urged the citizenry to endeavour not to kill them.

He said globally road crash death was estimated at 1.4 million annually and this is predicted to be the third leading cause of deaths, if not checked.
