Gyaaman Pensan Senior High Technical School, a community school located in Aboaso in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region have been blessed with an ultra-modern state of the art science laboratory for the science department.

Authorities in the school believe the facility will go a long way to help improve the performance of the students in the West African Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and also their practical application of the science course.

Speaking to some of the students, they were optimistic the facility will enable them pass their examinations well because they will have a practical feel of what they are taught theoretically.

Master Owusu Samanshia Godwin, a first year student of the school said he had his primary and junior secondary school education at Yawmatwa in the Bia West District of the Western Region and had difficulties in understanding the subject when he was at that level but believes the presence of the facility will enable him understand the subject matter.

Other students that were interviewed also echoed the significance of the presence of the facility in the school and the impart it will have on their chosen career.

For his part, the Headmaster of the school, Mr. Kwadwo Yiadom Boakye also confirmed that the facility which is largely from the Internally Generated Fund of the school has really changed the face of the school and it has brought some enthusiasm in the study of science in the school. He revealed that since the facility was erected, the science students have been punctual at class and even do overstay their science practical lessons with the view of making most of the facility to their advantage.

He said in the past, students had to travel some distance to Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS), in the Kumasi Metropolis for their science practicals.

Sometimes on arrival at OKESS, they had to wait for hours if OKESS students were having their practicals. This affected their period lessons, as they sometimes overstayed at OKESS running into other period of lessons.

He said on some occasions too, the vehicular traffic they had to endure to get to their destination made it difficult for them to make good use of the period they spend at the science laboratory. This he added demoralised the students and made the study of the subject unattractive to them.

Mr. Yiadom Boakye revealed that it is his vision to see Gyamaan Pensan Senior High Technical School among the best science schools in the region and in the nation in the near future. He added that with the calibre of equipments in the laboratory and the teaching personnel at the laboratory, in some few years to come, GPSHTS will be mentioned among the best science schools in the country.

Mr. Yiadom Boakye also mentioned the efforts of all stakeholders who had contributed in making the realisation of the facility in the school. He said the likes of Mrs. Joana Gyamfi (2014/2015) and Rev. Monica Afrifa Ntiamoah (March 2015/January 2016), who served as head teachers of the school, the chairman of the School Board, Mr. Stephen Anderson, the PTA Chairman and the teaching staff all played instrumental roles.

He also thanked the ITEC Group for providing them with the apparatus which included a projector, a fridge, a video camera, a table top computer and a printer, laboratory chemicals and also networking the place for them.

Mr. Yiadom Boakye however called on the general public and other stakeholders to come to the aid of the school in providing them with other logistics. He said the newly constructed library lacks the kind of books and the students will need to read to add on to the knowledge they receive from their teachers and the technical students also need a befitting practical laboratory to enable them also to have proper assimilation of the theories they learn in the classroom.
