LIBYA, ANGOLA SEND SPECIAL MESSAGES TO PRESIDENT KUFUOR
President Kufuor yesterday received special messages from the Libyan Leader, Mouamar Gaddafi and Angolan President, Eduardo dos Santos.
The contents of the messages were not disclosed, but were believed to be those of congratulations and the need to strengthen bilateral relations between them and Ghana.
Dr. Said A. Hafyana, Libyan Minister of State for African Union Affairs and Mr. George Rebelo Chikoti, Angolan Vice Minister for External Relations delivered the messages respectively.
PROCEEDINGS AT NEW YEAR SCHOOL
In a presentation at a symposium on Financial Administration and Accelerated Wealth Creation at the on-going 56th Annual New Year School in Accra yesterday, Mr. William Tetteh, General Manager of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), proposed that an Agricultural Development Fund be set up to finance an agricultural revolution in Ghana.
The Fund, Mr. Tetteh said, should be resourced with a reconstruction levy and duties on improved agricultural produce, including rice, sugar, wheat and diary products.
Mr. Tetteh also proposed the introduction of an Agricultural Corporation to procure the much needed but expensive farm machinery.
He noted that for enhanced productivity, modern farm machinery, irrigation plants, storage facilities and other imputs were required, but not available because of their cost.
CANADA TO ASSIST GHANA WITH US $100 MILLION
The in-coming Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Donald J. Bobiash, has indicated the readiness of Canada to assist Ghana with US $100 million.
Mr. Bobiash, who made the disclosure during a courtesy call on the Minister of Agriculture, Major (rtd.) Courage Quarshigah, in Accra last week, also indicated that the government of Canada was prepared to establish a research council in Ghana to provide a linkage between researchers of the two countries to enable them share knowledge and pursue opportunities for the commercialisation of research findings.
Mr. Bobiash also noted that Ghana's potential for agricultural development, given the country's natural resources and the population involved in agriculture.
He mentioned the modernisation of the agricultural sector as Ghana's greatest challenge and urged the adoption of appropriate policies, technological development and the promotion of the needed market in order to tap the nation's potential in the sector.
Currently, Canada is behind the Food and Agricultural Budgetary Support (FABS) project, which is aimed at the agricultural industry and is to be implemented over a five-year period.
Canada is also currently the largest bilateral donor to the agricultural sector, implementing over 13 projects in Ghana.
