President John Mahama has promised unemployed youth in the Central Region jobs after the completion of the Komenda Sugar Factory by the end of May.

According to the President, the sugar factory will produce job spaces for 7,000 youth to reduce the rate of unemployment in the Central Region.

President Mahama was speaking after inspecting numerous projects in the region as part of his Accounting to the People Tour.

“The survey that has been done shows that there have been about 10,000 tonnes of sugarcane available in the area to be purchased to start producing sugar,” the President said.

The revival of the sugar factory was part of the President’s 2012 election campaign.

Funding for the project – some $35 million – was provided by the Indian Export and Import (EXIM) Bank with collaboration with the Government of Ghana.

The factory is expected to reduce the importation of sugar and create indirect jobs for people in the sugar industry.
