PNC calls on workers to reflect and vote accordingly

Accra, May 4, GNA - The Peoples National Convention (PNC), has called on workers to reflect on the difficult road they have traversed since the overthrow of the third republic under the administration of Dr Hilla Limann and vote rightly.

A statement signed by Mr Emmanuel Wilson Jnr, PNC Communication Director and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra explained that from its very inception as a political party, the PNC has championed the cause of the working people.

'Indeed, the PNC remains the only genuine working class party in the country, having consistently defended the cause of workers, and this was clearly exhibited during the 27 -month rule when it was in government under the PNC and throughout the fourth republic, even as an opposition party.

'As this year is an election year, the PNC takes this opportunity to call on all workers to stand up in defence of their rights and not to allow themselves to be used as political pawns by those who glibly speak of workers' rights,' the statement stated.

The statement accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for only speaking about workers welfare, but in actual fact only seek to improve their own political nest.

The PNC statement said the meager salary increases that have been seen under the NDC and the NPP government in the fourth republic certainly does not auger well for the working people especially when seen against the background of hefty salary increases for those in the corridors of power.

There has been a clear indication of a slowing down of the economy these past three years, which most certainly has impacted adversely on job creation and economic stability.

The statement noted that in recent months, hundreds of workers have lost their jobs both in the public and private sector. Youth unemployment is on the ascendency and this is a recipe for disaster.

'The PNC do recognise the plight of Ghanaian workers and cannot ignore the fact that many from the public sector have lost their jobs due to political considerations in this fourth republic.

'We are proud of Ghana's working class credentials and called on Ghanaian workers to remain fully committed to the cause of a strong and united labour movement,' the statement said.
