General News Techiman: Drivers clash with military over bus terminal
MAY 4, 2016 LISTEN

Some drivers and traders in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo region clashed with military men over the use of a bus terminal, Wednesday.

The terminal has been under renovation for the past 15 months causing the drivers and traders to be relocated to a temporal station in the city.

According to the drivers, President Mahama assured them during his tour of the region last week that the terminal would be ready within a week.

However, they claim not to have heard from the authorities since the President's visit. They, therefore, besieged the terminal to protest the delay.

'We are not working today. We are here to protest the delay in the re-opening of the terminal. The relocation has affected our business, we want to move back,' one driver told Joy News' Anass Sabit in local the Twi language.

The Assembly sent military men to evict the aggrieved drivers and traders from the terminal and which resulted in a clash.

The drivers also claim there are reports suggesting the terminal would be handed over to the OA transport company, something they have vowed to resist.

Correspondent Sabit reports that calm has returned to the city after the police intervened. However, he says the traders and drivers have remained at the terminal.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive of Techiman, Philip Oppong Amponsah has assured them that the terminal will be commissioned and opened on Tuesday, April 10 .
