Damongo Youth Parliament Endorses Decision By Assembly

04.05.2016 LISTEN
By Damongo Youth Parliament

Damongo Youth Parliament ( DYP ) wishes to seize this opportune moment to commend the West Gonja District Assembly for taking a free - swinging step in declaring as illegal the activities of Rosewood Logging, Charcoal burning and timber lumbering.

The assembly,in a statement, declared the aforementioned activities as an offence punishable by law in and around the West Gonja District, and that not only are these activities unfriendly to our already degraded environment but constantly exposing us to the vagaries of the weather, hence, their decision.

The ban which took effect from Wednesday,27th April,2016, therefore Cautioned the general public to put an end to these activities with immediate effect or dance to the full rigors of the law.

The assemble has further reiterated its commitment to work with the police and other stakeholders to confiscate the content of vehicles used to transport same out of the district.

We,in the Youth Parliament received this news with hearts and minds filled with renewed hopes and conscious rethinking respectively, and cannot overemphasize our commitment to protecting and preserving the only home that we have - the environment.

We therefore, wish to assure the assembly of our unrelenting support in this fight, whiles admonishing the highest decision making body in the district to walk the talk in order not to reduce this whole declaration to a mere advice or a cause without effect. We are not tempted to buy into the argument that, "it's politics as usual", unless proven.

Suffice it to put on record that, ever since, these indiscriminate activities started and intensified in and around the district with impunity, sleepless has being our nights, commitments, vision and efforts to see to it that an end is put to 'these evils of our time', since, we were quite aware of the dangers they posed to our environment and common progress as future leaders.

The current incessant rainstorms hitting Damongo and causing loss to many properties only goes to underscores our conviction of the effects of an endangered environment.

We cannot(with emphasis!), however, pretend to overlook the concerns of many of our members among a bevy of others that this intervention is a late display of public gimmickry and tantamount to flogging a dead horse.

Indeed, these concerns by and large are genuine. But it's imperative as a matter of necessity to remind ourselves of the fact that, "it's better late than never".Let's also tap some inspiration from the local saying that, "What the goats have eaten, let go of that; it's what is left that we must protect".

We believe no matter the circumstances that there is hope for the future if and only we can work together in unity and purpose .

Mind you, the future belongs to you and I; the future belongs to our children and children's children.

Arise Youth of Damongo and be the change makers whiles disappointing the expectations of naysayers.

Long live the youth of Damongo
Long live Damongo Youth Parliament ( DYP )
Long live Damongo and Gonjaland as a whole.
May God bless us all.
