Kinshasa (AFP) - Sixteen civilians were killed in a brutal attack on a village in the restive east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, UN and local officials said Wednesday.

The unidentified assailants slashed the throats of local residents after they managed to get past army positions in the village in the Beni region of North Kivu province late Tuesday, local administrator Bernard Amisi Kalonda told AFP.
