The Member of Parliament (MP) for the South Tongu constituency in the Volta region, Hon Kobla Mensah Woyome has since 2012 invested more than Ghc 300,000 of his personal resources into the provision of sound education for the youth in the area to enable them become useful citizens to themselves, families, communities and society at large.

He has also dedicated close to 80% of his share of the MP`s Common Fund to educational purposes within the South Tongu District.

The MP`s investments were in the form of payment of school fees for students in various stages from Junior and Senior Schools, Technical and Vocational Skills training Institutions and Tertiary Institutions across the country.

Other sectors of the MP`s generosity are in the areas of the provision of school infrastructure to some deprived communities within the constituency, distribution of some 600, 000 free exercise books to school pupils, payment of registration fees for final year BECE candidates, provision and distribution of brand new Laptops and Computers to JHS and SHS such as St Catherine SHS, COMBOTECH, DASTECH among others.

The rest includes the provision of over 30,000 library books to selected schools within the District, the construction of several classroom units to some communities, the supply of desks to new created examination centres and schools.

Hon Woyome has also championed the supply of desktop computers, pendrives and motorbikes to the South Tongu District Education office in his bid to ensure quality delivery of education.

The lawmaker asserted that it has always been his passion to contribute his quota towards effective teaching and learning to ensure quality education is given to the youth especially the less privileged in society.

According to him children who are future leaders of our country should not be allowed to grow unprepared to support themselves and their communities and not being aware of their rights and responsibilities.

Addressing the chiefs and people during a recent South Tongu District`s maiden `Academic Excellence Awards’ event on the theme: `` Celebrating Learner Achievement, Promoting Quality Education’’, Hon Woyome challenged all stakeholders especially traditional rulers to develop keen interests in the education of all children in the areas.

The award is aimed at motivating learners directly in the Basic and Senior High schools to give off their best.

He charged chiefs, parents, school administrators and teachers to have equal responsibility towards the success of every child in the educational process urging chiefs especially to become responsible by providing the needed land for school projects.

Mr Woyome announced the institution of an annual award for the best BECE and WASSCE students dubbed MP`s Award. He has also hinted of his intention to institute an Award Scheme to reward Traditional leaders and Communities who`s efforts produced the Best students and schools within the constituency on annual basis.

He has also promised to sponsor the best South Tongu District BECE candidate for 2014 academic year, Abusah Exornam who completed Covenant Preparatory School, Tefle with aggregate seven (7) to Sogakofe SHS for senior high education.

The MP commended government for what he described as ``the massive investment in educational infrastructure’’ across the country.

The South Tongu District Director of education Mrs Angelica Attakey pledged her outfit’s determination to inspire student and schools towards academic excellence.

She called for collective efforts from all stakeholders to raise the falling standards of education in the area.
