Accra, May 3, GNA - RICS Consult Limited, an integrated marketing communication consultant, has launched the maiden edition of GH Green Awards and Expo 2016 on the theme: 'A Green Ghana Evolution - A Must for Every Ghanaian''.
The awards, to be held on August 26 at the Banquet Hall, is aimed at encouraging environmentally sustainable activities at the corporate, enterprise, socio-cultural, community and individual levels as a contribution towards climate change mitigation efforts for the benefit of humankind.
Speaking at the launch in Accra, Dr Alfred Sugri Tia, the Deputy Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, said promoting a green lifestyle must be part of an overarching and sustainable development strategy, striking a balance between social, ecological and economic aspects while achieving distributional and intergenerational equity.
'We do not need more recommendations, but a green economy roadmap which political leaders and all stakeholders need to commit to, with clear goals and monitoring mechanisms, ensuring an economically efficient, socially just and environmentally sound transition to green sustainable societies,'' he said.
Dr Tai said the transition process must be based on continuous engagement with civil society through social dialogue and that every individual had a stake in in building a better future leaving a lasting impact on the environment.
Mrs Rita Korankye Ankrah, the Patron of GH Green Awards, charged all to live responsibly and have a better attitude towards the environment.
The maiden event had two main categories namely; the Competitive and Non-Competitive. The Competitive Category identifies eleven main awards including The Green Organisation of the Year, Green Media of the Year, Environmental Sustainability Team of the Year.
The Non-Competitive Category shall recognise individuals and institutions who had played the advocacy role in practicing and promoting 'Green' and this category identifies three main awards which are; Recognition Awards, Awards for Green Advocacy and Special Awards to Environmental Remediation Victims.
The awardees would receive a plaque depicting the 'Tree of Life' which represents the foundation, strength and sustenance of life.
