The National Peace Council says it has not issued any statement condemning NPP Vice-Presidential candidate Dr. Bawumia for comments about religious balance at the Presidency.

It says the statement making rounds on social media is false and fabricated.

The Council believes the statement making the rounds is an attempt to pile political pressure on the national arbiter to respond to the NPP Vice-Presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's comments.

Addressing New Patriotic Party supporters last week at a village in the Sissala East District of the Upper West Region, Dr. Bawumia said, “another major issue that I want to bring to the attention of the people is that; if we look at the flagstaff house today, it does not reflect the people of Ghana in terms of religion”.

He said, “In this country, we are living peacefully and nicely Muslims and Christians. So we believe in the NPP that Christians and Muslims should work together and that is why whenever we pick a president as a Christian, we pick a Muslim as a vice.

"And when we come and pick a Muslim as a president, we will pick a Christian as a vice. So if, Insha Allah, Nana Akufo-Addo becomes president, he will swear with the Bible and enter the Flagstaff House and I will swear with the Qur'an and enter the flagstaff House.”

Earlier today, a carefully worded statement purportedly signed by the Chairman of the Peace Council, popped up on social media describing the comments as "unfortunate, irresponsible, unwarranted, and a recipe for chaos if allowed to go without condemnation."

But the National Peace Council maintains that it is yet to review Dr. Bawumia's comments before it can take a decision.

Ghana has indeed entered what has become known as the “silly season” of politics with elections about seven months away. Complete fabrication of stories are becoming a daily occurrence.

The Joy News channel of the Multimedia Group Limited has had cause to deny authoring politically charged stories circulated on social media, mainly Whatsapp.

The National Peace Council appears to have become the latest victim of fabrications.

The attention of the National Peace Council has been drawn to a statement circulating on the social media with a caption "THE NATIONAL PEACE COUNCIL CONDEMNS DR. BAWUMIA ON POTENTIALLY RELIGIOUS INFLAMMATORY COMMENT". We are very surprise some people want to play with the integrity and the credibility of the National Peace Council because of their political interest.

This statement going rounds on the social media which says Prof. Emmanuel Asante has signed on behalf of the National Peace council is false and fabricated. The National Peace council is not hypocrite to make such a release because of pressure from some political parties. We are yet to read what Dr. Bawumia said and confirm before we can agree whether to come out with a statement about it either than that, we in the National peace council entreat the general public to treat the said release with the contempt it deserves.

Thank you

REV. PROF. EMMANUEL ASANTE
