African Reform Movement leader registers to vote

Accra, April 30, GNA - Dr Nii Amu Darko, the Founder/ Leader of the African Reform Movement, a new group on Ghana's political landscape, has registered in the ongoing limited registration exercise to enable him to vote in the November elections.

Dr Darko, an Australian-based Medical Doctor, had retired from his profession and founded the African Reform Movement (ARM) to contest in the 2016 presidential election.

His wife, Madam Shika Awunnor, a Managing Consultant, also registered and had her voter's Identification Card.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Dr Darko said registration of voters was a period that political parties must be vigilant to avoid manipulations such as the registering of minors.

'The simple thing the Electoral Commission (EC) could do was to put in place a clause to request for the birth certificate of those who have turned 18 before they could be allowed to register to avoid any confusion,' he said.

Dr Darko said lodging of complaints before the Arbitration Committee of the EC was untenable, noting that the committee would eventually be overwhelmed with issues considering the enormity of the situation on the ground.

Giving the background of the ARM, Dr Darko said it was formed 'to rescue, resuscitate and reform Ghana from the current socio-economic challenges she is facing.'

He said the Movement would set a template of good governance in Ghana for the rest of Africa to emulate.

'The future of Africa lies in good governance and not a continental government. Our dying nation-state has been formed already and must be reformed if it had to be redeemed,' Dr Darko said.

He said: 'We are a moving force for real change. We are more than a party. I am physically, mentally and spiritually poised to take reigns of affairs in the country to change things.'
