Tema, April 30, GNA - Tema Central Member of Parliament, Mr Kofi Brako, has engaged his constituents in a tree planting exercise to mark Earth Day 2016 on the theme: "Trees for the Earth. Let's get planting".

The exercise took place in Tema Community 7 Valco Park where the Member of Parliament is developing a Green Model Community Football Park for his constituents.

Members of the Coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations in Tema (CONGOT), school children, teachers and some residents of the area participated in the exercise.

Earth day is celebrated to the human race of their collective responsibility to protect and sustain the planet Earth.

"We as citizens owe it a responsibility to let our actions count positively on the environment such as planting and growing suitable trees in our communities", Mr Brako said

Mr Brako disclosed that the park in its developing stage has an irrigation system to care for the natural green grass to ensure safety and sustainability.

Mr Robert Amiteye, President, Environmental Club, said the event was an ongoing project and hinted of fifty six more seedlings to be planted to complete the tree planting project.

This, he said, would help reduce the dust which gets into rooms of residents in the community.

"Trees reduce high environmental temperatures and prevents oil erosion.

They also create an atmosphere for cleaner fresh air as they also serve as windbreaks', Mr Amiteye said.
