Sunyani, April 30, GNA - Persons requesting for replacement of lost Voter Identification (ID) cards are to pay five Ghana cedis into the Electoral Commission's bank account, said the ECs Sunyani Municipal Officer, Mr Yaw Opoku.

He said after the payment, the persons must present a copy of the deposit slip to the Commission's District Office for registration and issuance of a new voter ID card.

Mr Opoku told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview on Thursday in Sunyani that a directive from the EC's National Headquarters called on district officers to replace missing ID cards with effect from Thursday, April 28, 2016 after payment to the bank.

He said the limited voter registration exercise was taking place in 19 selected registration centres for five days and would then be moved to other earmarked centres in the Municipality to continue with the process.

Mr Opoku said the Commission had not encountered any problem in any of the centres and added that all the required materials were available for its smooth progress.

A visit to some of the registration centres by the GNA in the Sunyani Township indicated low turnout. At Akuoko Electoral Area only eight persons had registered as at 1200 hours while the Akorakwadwom Electoral Area had registered nine.

Mr Alfred Aggrey, the Registration Officer at the Akorakwadwo Centre, said the only challenge they had was guarantors for those who did not have any identification cards to enable them to register.

Party agents, mainly from the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress, were present at the registration centres but there were no security officers.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christopher Tawiah, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer, when contacted on the security situation, said even though the police were not at the various centres, they were monitoring the exercise closely to ensure peace.

He said the EC was collaborating with the police and would alert them to intervene when necessary.
