APR 28, 2016 LISTEN

National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku, says they will not tolerate the challenges facing the Electoral Commission (EC)’s Limited Registration Exercise which commenced on Thursday.

He says the November 2016 election is very crucial to the Party as well as Ghanaians and the earlier the Commission puts in place measures to stamp out those challenges the better.

Joy News has gathered there were cases of violation at some selected polling stations in the country.

Some potential voters were reported to have been turned away due to faulty machines whilst others were issued with ID cards with a 1980 date on it.

Speaking on Joy News, Mr. Awuku says the registration “exercise has been poorly organized”.

He explained complaints of registrants being issued with ID cards with dates such as 24, 25, 26 and 27 of April in the Ashanti and Eastern region does not augur well for the Commission's image.

“This is what you get when you have the Chairperson of the EC who will more or less exhibit complete dereliction of duty”, he said.

Director of Elections for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ofosu says the first day of the exercise has been smooth with a “few hiccups in some places”.

He admitted that some registrants were issued with ID cards with wrong dates but explained it is to be expected considering the fact that the exercise is being conducted in over 3,000 registration centers at a go across the country.

He charged the EC to intensify its publicity as the exercise moves into its second day.

The EC's limited registration exercise is scheduled from April 28 to May 8.

The exercise is meant to afford first-time voters, who are 18 years and above the opportunity to register to vote in the upcoming election.
