The new governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Dr. Abdul Nasiru Issahaku has assured Ghanaians the Central Bank will protect the purse of the nation although it is an election year.

Speaking at a swearing-in ceremony at the Flagstaff House, Dr Issahaku said the Bank was focusing seriously on economic resurgence and explained that measures were being instituted to bring down inflation.

"We have to stay focused," Dr Issahaku told President John Mahama after being sworn in. “Growth is beginning to pick up and we have to stay the course".

On his part, Mahama stated that the government will stay the path towards economic progress.

He said the economic prospects of the country had been predicted by recognised institutions to be very good and the government will continue to put its fiscal house in order to reap the benefits.

Mahama encouraged Dr Issahaku to work together with the Minister of Finance to ensure that the economy becomes more resilient.

Dr Issahaku, 54, is the 14th Governor of the Bank of Ghana. He succeeded Dr Henry Wampah, who retired last month. Until his appointment, Dr Issahaku was the second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Mahama also swore in the new Second Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Dr Johnson Asiamah.
