A Deputy Coordinating Director at the Asutifi North District Assembly in the Brong Ahafo Region, Mr. Augustine Asi has tasked school pupils to concentrate on their studies to acquire the skills to become good managers and leaders of the country.

He noted leadership qualities of most influential personalities in the country were acquired in school and at a tender age. He therefore appealed to them respect their teachers and what they are being taught.

Mr. Asi was addressing an open day organised by the D/A Girls School in Kenyasi No.2 and sponsored by the District Ghana Health Adolescent Reproductive Health-Programme (GHARP-P) as part of activities to marking the end of the term for the academic year.

He explained the GHARP-P initiative was to improve access to and utilization of quality health services to adolescents and to help solve the numerous social and health problems such as teenage pregnancies, drug abuse and school dropout confronting them.

He appealed to the teachers to serve as role models to their pupils for them to be healthy and responsible citizens to society.

Miss Felicia Ohenewaa Larbi, SHEP Coordinator in an address said teachers and heads of schools were given training to enhance the sustainability of the project and commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) for adopting the initiative as part of the curriculum for schools.

The Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Faustina Annan said the pupils since the implementation of the programme have sat for the basic level examination without reports of teenage pregnancies and commended the sponsors of the programme.

She made a passionate appeal to the assembly and development partners to come to the aid of school with teaching and learning materials.

The pupils later performed a drama on the importance of education and dangers of teenage pregnancies.

The GHARH-P is sponsored by the Department for International Development (DFID), Pallidium and the assembly with Ghana education Service (GES), Ghana Health Service (GHS) and National Youth Authority (NYA) as implementing partners.
