Feature Article Life Principles To Live By
MAR 30, 2016 LISTEN

A sailor needs a compass to guide him reach his destination. If you were to enter a country you are not familiar with, you would certainly need a map to guide you as you move from one place to another.

You, like the sailor, would need something to guide you to live a successful life. Life principles are the fundamental ways to act to achieve your best life. These are standards set by God in his book, the Bible.

They are meant to govern our life so that we become the best we can be as destined by God.

Conquer evil with good
“Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12: 17-21). I am sure you encountered situations where you were upset as a result of what someone said or did to you. I am sure you were tempted to take revenge unless you restrained yourself. You would be tempted to follow King Hammurabi’s laws which say, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” Bible counsels us not to take revenge. Let the bad in others bring out the good in you. Use good to overcome evil.

Upgrade yourself
Make learning a lifelong habit. Through learning you can acquire a depth of knowledge and wisdom which are critical to success in life and business. In Daniel 1:17 the word of God says, “As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.” When we study his word and remain loyal to him, we can trust God to grant us wisdom.

To increase in learning, read success nurturing books and ponder on them. Read the biographies of successful people. Get mentors and learn from them. Attend seminars organized by the experts. Watch movies and listen to audiotapes on how others have made it in life and most important apply their principles to move your life forward.

Avoid temptations
As much as possible we should not yield to temptations. Do not associate with the ungodly or follow the path of sinners. You will certainly be blessed if you remain faithful and loyal to the Lord. Psalm 1:1 counsels us: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

When faced with temptation, look up to God; he will make a way for you to escape it. 1Corinthians 10:13 says, “ There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

Don’t be egotistical
Some people are self-centred. They pride themselves in their achievements and look down on others. This kind of attitude must be avoided since there is a saying that “pride goeth before a fall.” The author of Galatians cautions us; “Let us not be desirous of vainglory, provoking one another, envying one another.” Let us not boast of our achievements lest we incur the wrath and envy of others.

The golden rule
Jesus Christ, the greatest man who ever lived, once taught his followers: “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. How do you want to be treated? Treat people in the same way, regardless of age, gender, social status, religion or skin colour.

God will not forsake you
“When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up”. (Psalm 27:10). You will certainly be facing a difficult life if your relatives and close associates abandon you. When we obey the commandments and remain faithful to God, we can be assured of his mighty blessings.

Use your gifts and talents
God has given us gifts and talents to live our best life. We are all gifted in a way. Romans 12:6-8 declares, “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.” Explore inward to know what sets you on fire. What do you do exceptionally well? That may be a clue to your gift or special talent. Turn your passion into a huge success. Turn your talent into a multi-million dollar business.

Conclusion
Without guiding principles a person may make a mess of his life. When we live by the aforementioned principles, our life will certainly become outstanding and meaningful. With Godly principles to guide you, God’s purpose for your life could be fulfilled.
