Accra, Feb. 14, GNA - The Islamic Council for Development and Humanitarian Services (ICODESH) has presented 21 sewing machines to the some women in some zongo communities.

The sewing machines were donated to ICODESH by the Red Cresent of Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the presentation will be replicated in all ten regions nationwide.

The machines are aimed at empowering Muslim women who have passed out, to rely on themselves and also maintain their dignity through their vocation or trade.

Sheik Mustapha Ibrahim, Chairman of ICODESH, said the beneficiaries were selected from various vocational and learning centres through the recommendations of the heads of the centres.

'At first we were just giving it to anybody who comes, but we realise that it was going to wrong hands and now we do the selection from the various centres.'

He said it is the intention of ICODESH to expand the scope of the donation to hairdressers and head potters and also provide support men who are ready to rear cattle or are involved in the sanitation business.

Sheik Ibrahim said ICODESH is taking care of over 4,500 orphans drawn from the various regions, including their education, health and feeding and other expenses.

He said the demand for the support of ICODESH were more than what they get and appealed to donors not only Muslims but also Christians to support the organization to help the needy.

The Chairman said ICODESH also builds schools, mosques and other facilities such as toilets to communities who lack such facilities and this has been going on in the past 25 years.

He condemned the people who tag the Islamic religion as a violent one and called on Muslims to protect their religion and their dignity.

ICODESH was established in 1981 to deal with humanitarian services and support the development.
