The Obuasi Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education(NCCE) on Thursday, 11th February, 2016,organised a colourful programme to formally inaugurate the reconstituted Obuasi Inter-party Dialogue Committee.

The 36-member committee has an immediate task to educate and mediate on issues to forestall violence and other political disturbances in the Municipality prior to the 2016 general elections.

In his open address, the Municipal Director of NCCE ,Mr. Emmanuel Duah Attobrah said" the decision to form an Inter-party Dialogue Committee dates back to 2011 prior to the 2012 General Elections but it was disbanded immediately after the elections".

According to him it has become necessary to activate the Committee and bring all stakeholders on board since the 2016 General elections is just around the corner.

Mr Attobrah opined that there is the need to monitor the airwaves in order to censure speeches that has the tendancy to trigger violence before, during and after the elections.This,he posited will be one of the key responsibilities of the committee.

The Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education, Mr Alhassan Yakubu in his speech lauded the Obuasi Office of NCCE for been proactive and appealed to the general public to monitor and participate in the various educative programmes organised by NCCE.

He,however seized the opportunity to make public the functions of the Inter-party Dialogue Committee which include;

To foster inter-party relations

To assist the NCCE to plan educational activities

To solve disputes between political parties

To monitor Radio and Television programmes to ensure accurate reportage

A representative of the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Anthony Buckner who is also the Deputy Municipal Co-ordinating Director advised the committee to place much emphasis on 'Dialogue' as a tool in resolving conflict and stressed that "where there is no dialogue, there is confusion".

He called for tolerance among the various political parties and emphasised the need to accommodate dissenting views, whiles stressing on the fact that, the committee is duty bound to deflate the seeming tensions in the air en route to the November General Elections.

Nana Owusu Akyaw Brempong,who represented traditional leaders was elected as the Chairman of the Committee whiles,Mr Kwabena Sikayena of Time Fm was elected the Secretary.

Chiefs,Opinion leaders,Men and women groups, Political party representatives, youth groups and the Media were all present at the inauguration.
