The Police has announced its readiness to provide protection to officials of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation(GBC) to collect TV license.

The Director General in charge of Services, COP James Oppong Boanuh, said the police will provide protection to the revenue collectors in    areas where there is the possibility that they would be attacked.

“TV licensing Act 1966 (NLCD 89) as amended, directs that  every person with a television set should pay a fee, and the police as law enforcement agency must enforce the law.”

He made this known when some senior police personnel took their turns to pay their television license fee at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

In his turn, Pastor Ebenezer Botwe, Deputy Director of Finance and Head of TV License Unit, GBC, said the law stipulates that a person shall not install or use a television receiving set unless there is in existence, in relation to that set, a valid television receiving set license granted by the licensing authority under this Act.

.
“The Act also directs that a person shall not carry on the business of selling, hiring or otherwise disposing of television receiving sets or of repairing television receiving sets unless that person holds a valid dealers' license, granted by the licensing authority in relation to the respective business”.

Pastor Botwe said, domestic users shall pay GH¢3 per month   while dealers and commercial users shall pay GH¢5 depending on the number of TV sets available.

“When you pay the TV license, your data is taken including your phone number, after which a message of confirmation will be sent through SMS to your phone. Officials of TV license can use your phone number to determine whether you have paid your TV License or not.”

Refusal to pay for the license, he revealed, will attract a penalty of GH¢3,000 or a year's prison term by the law court.
