We Pay Taxes To Be Protected – Nana Konadu

A founder member of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, has bemoaned the state of security and citizen safety in the country.

According to her, the seeming rise in the rate of violent crime and murders in Ghana raises doubts about the ability of the state to protect the lives and property of its citizens.

She is therefore calling on government to do more to ensure the safety of Ghanaians.

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings made these comments at the re-launch of the Friends of Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings (FONKAR) in Accra ahead the November 2016 polls.

Her comments come following the gruesome stabbing to death of the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North at his home at Shiashi in Accra.

The MP was killed at dawn on Tuesday when his assailants entered his room at dawn and inflicted multiple stabs on him.

Nana Konadu reminded government to be mindful of the fact that one of its responsibilities to the citizenry for the taxes it receives, is to provide them with adequate security.

“It is for these reasons that we pay taxes so that our taxes can be used to pay the police and other security agencies so that they protect us. Inasmuch as we cannot have one policeman per Ghanaian and therefore we need to have a certain sense of personal responsibility, we also need to know that we are safe with our police and the military in our country.

"I personally think that we are in a state of mourning but I personally feel that it is important that we feel secure whether in our homes, or on our roads and workplaces.”

She said, “The only way is to let us know that you are in charge of us and in charge of our country and we have security because you are giving it to us.”

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, who is seeking to lead Ghana on the ticket of the NDP, is expected to contest in the November polls after the Electoral Commission disallowed her in 2012, because she had allegedly failed to meet the required processes for her to contest.
