New Police Commissioner: Plan of Action Welcomed
10.02.2016 LISTEN

The DA in the Western Cape welcomes the newly appointed Police Commissioner in the Western Cape’s plan to fight crime in the province. Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula made a presentation to the committee today, in which he outlined that he will pay special attention to the key challenges facing crime fighting in the province.

The Commissioner has 28 years of uninterrupted experience in the South African Police Service, 11 of which was spent in management positions.

In my capacity as the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Community Safety in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, I will ensure that the committee monitors the progress made on the Commissioner’s plan of action.

It is reassuring that the new Commissioner plans to focus on the most critical challenges to policing in the Western Cape. The Commissioner outlined that he would take on key challenges to crime fighting in the province, which include:

  • Gang-related violence;
  • Vacancies and the shortage of police officers, especially visible policing, detectives as well as the low recruitment rate of reservists;
  • Effective use of CCTV footage in criminal investigations;
  • Police brutality, and;
  • Fostering good community police relations.

I wish the Commissioner well in his new role. We look forward to establishing a constructive relationship with the Commissioner and supporting his efforts to address the high crime rates in the Western Cape.
