Man slits girlfriend's throat, attempts suicide

A 29-year-old bar attendant who attempted to kill his girlfriend by slitting her throat and later tried to commit suicide for being denied sex has been placed in prison custody pending  trial.

For his action, Michael Commey  has been  charged with attempted murder and  suicide  before an Accra Magistrate Court,  presided over by Ms Arit Nsemoh.

Presenting the facts of the case, Chief Inspector Gregory Yeboah said  Commey was a drinking spot attendant and has been in a relationship  with the victim, Mercy Amerterfio, 29, for almost a year now.

The complainant, Kwesi Appiah, is a drinking spot operator in a house near the Kaneshie Central Pentecost Church. Commey resides in the house where Appiah's spot is located.

On January 19, 2016,  Commey  called  Mercy and  informed her that her aunt with whom he works had dismissed him for theft.

The next day at about 6:30 a.m., Mercy visited Commey at his residence. Commey then served Mercy with a bottle of  beer and some food.

He also had a glass of beer and two shots of local gin, Akpeteshie.

According to Chief Inspector Yeboah,  while they were both in the room, Commey locked the door and demanded to sleep with Mercy, who refused with the explanation that she was not well.

 She took her bag to attend to nature's call but Commey prevented her, saying it was just an excuse to deny him sex. After this, an argument ensued between the two.

Chief Inspector Yeboah said Commey pushed Mercy unto the bed in the course of the argument and proceeded to use a blade to slash her throat. 

He said  Mercy started screaming for help and Appiah and some  witnesses forced the door open and found Commey in the act of slitting Mercy's throat. They pushed him off her and rushed her to the Cocoa Clinic.

After the act, Commey attempted to kill himself by slashing his stomach and throat with the  blade and  he was also rushed to the same clinic for treatment. 

 Mercy has since been discharged from the hospital while Commey has been remanded into police custody.
