Juaso (Ash), Feb. 1, GNA - Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, a breast cancer campaigner, has urged families, especially husbands not to abandon their partners suffering from the cancer.

They should rather support, show compassion and love to such patients as they are taken through treatment.

Dr. Mrs. Wiafe Addai, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Breast Care International (BCI), made the call at a free health screening for breast and other non-communicable diseases held at Juaso in the Asante-Akim South District.

It was organized by the Juasohene, Nana Asafoakaa Agyei Tabi, as part of activities to mark the celebration of the 'Akwasidae' a festival celebrated by the Ashantis once in every six weeks.

A combined team of health professionals from the Peace and Love Hospital and the Juaso District Hospital were on hand to examine hundreds of people for various diseases including breast and cervical cancers, hypertension and diabetes.

Dr. Mrs. Wiafe Addai expressed worry about the situation where cancer patients were neglected because of the erroneous belief that the disease was caused by witchcraft and said that would have to end.

She stated that the misconceptions and myths often associated with the disease were also preventing women from reporting to the health facilities for early treatment

The cancers were a purely medical condition and she urged the public, especially women to seek early treatment and stop spending fortunes looking for help from spiritualists and prayer camps.

The disease, which used to be common among women above 40 years is increasingly affecting young women in their early 20s.

Dr. Mrs. Wiafe Addai encouraged regular self-examination of the breast and medical check-ups for early detection of the cancer

Nana Agyei Tabi asked the people to pay particular attention to their health and adopt healthy lifestyles.
