Kumasi, Jan. 26, GNA - Madam Amina Mohammed, Nigeria's Minister of Environment, has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC).

This is the body that advocates for improved sanitation and hygiene for vulnerable and marginalized people across the world.

The Council has been facilitating multi-stakeholder collaboration around sanitation and contributing to the international community's broader goals of poverty eradication, health and environmental improvement, gender equality and long-term social and economic development.

Dr Christopher Williams, its Executive Director, in a signed statement emailed to the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, said her appointment will take effect from April 5.

Madam Mohammed, a former United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary General and Special Advisor to the Secretary General on post 2015 Development Planning, would chair the steering committee and guide the work of council, from its Geneva- based secretariat.

The statement said the expectation was that she would use her rich experience and network of contacts in politics, business, academia and knowledge of the UN, to raise awareness and improve sanitation and hygiene for the deprived.

It said through the Global Sanitation Fund (GSF) - multi-donor UN trust fund, WSSCC would continue to support national efforts to help rural communities improve their sanitation and adopt good hygiene practices.

The Council's programmes have empowered over eight million people in 3,600 communities worldwide. GNA
