The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) has disputed government claims the withdrawal of student allowances has resulted in increased enrollment in the Colleges of Education.
National Co-ordinator, John Baguri, says government’s action has rather reduced interest forcing authorities to lower admission requirement in order to attract students.
“If the cancellation of teacher trainee allowance could raise the number of students who could enroll, and if people are really interested, why was he cut-off point reduced from C6 to D7?” the questioned.
He lamented “in 2014/2015, thousands of students were sent home because they could not justify themselves; this was unprecedented”.
President Mahama told last Tuesday’s press conference at the Flag Staff House government is also paying feeding grant to the students who also have access to the Student Loan Trust
Speaking on Burning Issues on Luv FM in Kumasi, Mr. Baguri said irregular release of the feeding grant is already putting students in distress.
A retired educationist, Sampson Amofa-Kra, observed the controversy surrounding the withdrawal of the allowances suggests little consultation was not done before implementation.
“If we have had done good preparation; involvement of stakeholders, the understanding would have been there before introduction,”, he emphasized.
He, however, told host, David Akuetteh, the discussion must not be politicized.
