Taxi Cap Drivers In Tamale Metropolis Mad Over “yellow Yellow” Operation

The taxi cap drivers together with Trotro drivers operating within the Tamale Metropolis on Tuesday December 1,2015 protested against what they termed a cheat by the metro assembly for allowing the tricycles popularly called “yellow Yellow” to operate commercially without paying any tax.

According to them, taxi drivers in the metropolis pay taxi to the assembly but the tricycles or “yellow yellow” riders don’t pay a pane to the assembly as tax, and that number plates used by these tricycles don’t give them the authority to operate commercially.

In a petition signed by Sheritt Mccarthy Frimpong, PRO of the group, and presented to the Regional Coordinating council,(RCC) they have given the metro assembly, the MTTU and other stakeholders one week ultimatum to address the issues raised other wise they will seek a redress of the LI 2180 of 2012 in the law court and also stop paying tax and licensing fees to the assembly.

They noted that the allowance of the tricycles to operate commercially violets and contradicts the legislative instrument (LI2180) section 128 of the 2012 motor traffic regulations. “hon, for your information this tricycles are being used as passenger commercial transport in your region without any one questioning their operations. Further more,they even operate this tricycles with school going age children from 12 to 15 years. Who are supposed to be in classrooms?. No registration for most of them, No riding insurance, No tax and DVA white paper to cover their tricycle motor bikes” the added.

The petition also said”Their operations are literally telling us how our constitution looks so weak and how the structures and the laws of the country are no longer working” They explained that, several complains have been made to the GPRTU but has not seen any results. Some passengers who spoke to Al-miral news agency have however expressed their love for the tricycle and wished that they are sacked from operating.

They said the fare of the tricycles compare to that of the taxes are cheaper so the need for them to operate. They also touch on availability of the tricycles always, compare to that of the taxes. The regional police command who supervised the demonstration calmed the drivers down and promised of good results.
