Dodowa (GAR), Dec 1, GNA - Dr (Mrs) Jane Irina Adu, President of The Potter's Village, has called on Ghanaians to support under-privileged children in society, to grow into responsible children.

She said some children were endowed with talents and that due to some circumstances, they were left behind without any proper care and support to help develop them.

Dr (Mrs) Adu made the call at the 15th Anniversary celebration of The Potter's Village at Dodowa in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater-Accra Region.

The celebration was on the theme: 'Who Becomes The President'.

Dr (Mrs) Adu said the intention to start the organization was borne out of the realization that many women and children in the country were exposed to the devastating effects of domestic violence and abuse, an issue which she said, had led to the collapse of many homes.

She said women suffered the emotional, social and economic consequences of family disintegration more than their male partners, thus limiting their capabilities to cater for their children.

'This condition compels the children to abandon their roots, walking and hawking in the streets as sheep without shelter, leaving their fate and future to chance'

Dr (Mrs) Adu disclosed that 50 women had so far been trained in dressmaking, hairdressing, batik tie and dye and catering.

She said the Village currently provided shelter for 120 children from Ghana and other neighbouring countries and that some of them who were beneficiaries of the shelter programme, had graduated from various vocational and tertiary educational institutions.

Dr (Mrs) Adu appealed to Non-Governmental Organizations to support the village to enable it achieve its aim of providing shelter for the poor and the needy.

She thanked Smile For Mum, a United States-based NGO, Blue Skies Energy Drink and Mr Yaw Adu, a businessman for sponsoring the programme, and for assisting the work of the Village over the years.

Ehunabobrim Nana Prah Agyensaim the sixth, Paramount Chief of Owirenkyi Traditonal Area, said the fact that women and children were the hub around which the family revolved, was undisputed, adding that women held families together while children were the foundation upon which the future of the nation was built.

He urged Ghanaians to offer the children the necessary support at all times to enable them to develop their talents.

Ehunabobrim Nana Agyensaim presented a cheque for GHC 5,000 to support the work of the Village.
