The Ministry of Education has backed a policy of University of Cape Coast (UCC) to withdraw students after they fail in one attempt to re-sit their papers.
Speaking on Adom FM’s ‘Dwaso Nsem’, Tuesday morning, the Deputy Minister of Education, Alex Kyeremeh said universities are autonomous and that ministry cannot interfere in its policies.
“The Ministry does not control affairs of the Universities. Let’s give UCC the necessary support to handle the issue,” Alex Kyeremeh stated.
A policy by the UCC - which oversees the academic affairs of the colleges -, gives students one chance to re-sit examinations of courses they fail in. The policy also demands that students who fail after the one attempt be repeated – if they so desires or be withdrawn.
Students of Mampong Technical College of Education , Akrokerri College of Education and the Wesley College of Education, all in the Ashanti Region have been demonstrating since last Friday, against the policy.
At the Mampong Technical College of Education a student was arrested after 19 Louvre blades were destroyed by s tones thrown by the students at school facilities.
The violent protests led to temporary close down of Mampong Technical College of Education Friday, and Akorerri College of Education, Monday.
At the Wesley College of Education, the protest turned violent after police charged and whipped students who had gathered in front of their dormitory to watch the rather peaceful demonstration.
The protesting students demand that the UCC – give them more than one chance to redeem themselves when they fail in their exams. They also want to be allowed to stay on campus while they wait to re-sit the examinations.
According to the Deputy Minister of Education, the students have always known about the policy. He added that the policy, approved by the National Council for Tertiary Education, will help improve the standards of future teachers.
The Council is however unhappy with the confusion and rioting in some Colleges of Education especially in the Ashanti Region
It has summoned Principals from the various Colleges of Education and their Student Representative Councils to an emergency meeting in Accra tomorrow over the issue.
