Resisting UCC’s Tyranny On College Of Educations

Resisting UCCs Tyranny On College Of Educations
01.12.2015 LISTEN

Students of the various College of Educations nationwide are furious at the new law from the examining body at the University of Cape Coast. We all know UCC have been the examination body for all College of Educations and they set their rules and regulations for the smooth running of the 3 year course.

Referral

The main reason behind the students registering their displeasure through peaceful demonstrations is the new examination rules that says If a student fails one paper out of the 9 papers, he or she is to go home and wait for 1 whole year before coming back to pay Ghc 100.00.00 to rewrite!

Students in other Tertiary Institutions pay not more than Ghc 50.00 to rewrite a failed paper.

Why on earth should someone fail in or two papers and pass in the others and made to go sit home for one year before coming back. The ministry of Education is silent, Mr. Samuel Okudzato Ablakwa under whose sector this is happening is also silent whiles UCC tries to run the CoE exams as their own.

Most of the Professors and Drs. At the University of Cape Coast never had their tertiary education here in Ghana and instead of making things flexible just as they had it in Abroad are trying to make education in Ghana only for the rich and corrupt.

Student-Teacher ratio

At the Akrokerri College of Education, 82 2nd year students were made to go home and come back next year to rewrite because they failed in either one or two papers. In February next year, after their exams, others will be told go home and if this continues, how many Teachers will the various schools produce to come fill the large vacuum of classes without teachers.

Trauma and pressure on Parents and Students

A student who have been sent home to read and come back after one year to write a single or two papers after the hardship he or she went through before getting admission might never pass a single paper! Parents are going to suffer unnecessary trauma after paying huge sums of money every semester and being told their wards have been sent home for failing a paper.

Increase in Examination malpractices and sexual abuse

Thanks to UCC, the rate at which our future Teachers will start indulging in examination malpractices will supersede that of BECE and WASSCE. Trainee Teachers will be desperate to pass their papers so the increase in the ‘ways and means’ of passing. Our sisters wouldn’t be left out of this chance created by UCC for male lecturers to have advantage of their poor female students who will do anything to resist going home for 1 year.

Call

I call on the Minister for Education and her Ministers to call UCC to order and rescind this examination rule which will favour no one but increase examination malpractices and sexual abuse.

The media should cut the noise on the power barges and help talk something positive into the ears of the University of Cape Coast.

What I know is education policies should be Child centered not what will benefit the Professor and Drs who had their educations in Abroad on Scholarships.+
