An Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) staff is undergoing treatment after he was assaulted by two persons who he queried for illegally tapping electricity.

The victim Benjamin Nakotey, in the course of his routine duties, went to the Peduase Lodge area, a suburb of Aburi.

After knocking the gate of a house, he saw two occupants come out.

'The house had no meter at the time of our visit even though it had one earlier. In spite of the fact that there was no meter the house still enjoyed electricity,' he said.

He said 'as we engaged the two persons in a conversation I began taking pictures attracting the wrath of one of the occupants.'

The ECG man was ordered to delete the pictures to which he refused and discovering that the atmosphere was becoming charged, he and his colleague began moving away towards their motorbike a short distance parked away.

'Just as we tried to move away one of the men had caught up with us. He prevented us from moving away by holding the motorbike. He butted my head using his head. I could not see anymore but managed to call for support from the office. I was taken to the Tetteh Quashie Hospital from where I was referred to another hospital and finally Korle Bu Teaching Hospital where I was admitted and currently receiving treatment after my discharge,' he said.

One of the suspects has been arrested by the Aburi Police but the other accomplice is on the run, DAILY GUIDE has been told.

In a related development, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the ECG, Accra East Region, Grace Garshong has announced that a taskforce is currently inspecting residences and other facilities to detect instances of electricity theft.

Anyone caught stealing electricity, she said, would be dealt with according to the law.
