Wesley College of Education demo turns violent; police beat protesters

A demonstration by some students of the Wesley College of Education in the Ashanti Region has turned violent, with reports of police brutalities.

The students have been demonstrating Tuesday morning against a policy that only allows re-sit of examinations only once.

The protesting students wants the University of Cape Coast – which oversees the academic affairs of the school – to give them another chance to redeem themselves when they fail in their exams.

The students complain some of their colleagues have been dismissed after failing in a re-sit paper.

Chanting war songs, the students called on the University of Cape Coast to reverse the decision and call back students who had been dismissed as a result of the policy.

“We want a change in the policy. This policy is not fine”, one student told Luv FM's Erastus Asare Donkor.

Police officers, who were invited to prevent escalation of the protests have turned violent, Erastus reports.

Erastus, who is at the school premises, reports that the police beat up some of the students with sticks.

"It was totally unsolicited,” Erastus reports.

He said the police charged on the students – some of whom had gathered in front of their dormitory to watch the rather peaceful demonstration – and whipped them with sticks for no apparent reason.

“They did nothing to provoke the police officers”, Erastus said, adding that “they did not even destroy any property belonging to the school”.
