Six best graduating students in the University of Ghana for the 2015/2016 academic year have received cash awards of $11,200 from the Tony Elumelu Foundation as part of the Tony and Awele Elumelu Prize.
The prize is to encourage scholarship and entrepreneurship among young people on the African continent.
At a short presentation ceremony on Friday, Pro Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic and Students’ Affairs of the University of Ghana, Professor Seth Kwame Offei said the awards was to motivate students who performed well and also challenge other students to work hard towards academic excellence.
He added that the University of Ghana has done its best to create the congenial atmosphere for all students to excel.
Arume Ighoroje, Leadership Development Analyst of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, said the foundation started its operations in 2012 in Nigeria and other African countries by giving awards, mentorship, job placements and other opportunities to young Africans.
According to her, the foundation is now focused on entrepreneurship as the primary vehicle to achieve economic empowerment in Africa hence the launch of the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme which will see the discontinuation of the Tony & Awele Elumelu Prize.
Four of the six students, undergraduates, received $1,400 each while two postgraduate students received $2,400 each. All six students were also presented with a plaque.
Ms. Vannessa Appiah-Gyamera, best graduating student in Economics expressed her appreciation to the foundation and management of the University for facilitating the process and making it possible to reward their efforts. She indicated that the awards will challenge her and her colleagues to work harder to achieve greater feats in their fields of endeavor.
Other best graduating students awarded at the event were Mr. Joseph Yeboah Nortey, best graduating student in Engineering, Ms. Emmae Adom, best graduating student in Agriculture, Dr. George Akyea Blankson, best graduating student in medicine.
The others were Mr. Desmond Okpoti Koney, best graduating student in MBA Accounting and Mr. Bernard Kofi Sarpong.
