The Akrokerri College of Education in the Ashanti region has been closed down by Management after some irate students tried to burn down the school.

Speaking to Adom News’ Isaac Normenyo, the Principal of the College said the students went on rampage Sunday, November 29 2015 against officials of University of Cape Coast (UCC), who are regulators of the College.

The angry students were not happy with some new directives introduced by the regulators.

He said an intelligence picked by the management of the school indicated that the angry students were behind a fire incident at the school’s dining hall, Monday.

“But for the early intervention of other students, the school would have been burnt by now. They started the fire at the dining hall at Monday dawn,” Dr. Emmanuel Nyamekye said.

The irate students are demanding a reverse of a decision by management that says students should be dismissed after failing an examination once.

Secondly, they are calling on school authorities to allow them to stay on campus until they are done re-writing the courses they failed in.

But according to the Principal, it is against the college’s rule to allow the students to stay on campus until their re-sit which is due September next year.

“We spoke to them yesterday and they agreed to go home so we thought everything had been solved until we heard about the fire incident this morning,” Dr. Nyamekye said.

He added that the management of the college was forced to close it down temporarily to avoid further mishaps.

According to Dr. Emmanuel Nyamekye, management of the school will meet and decide when the school will reopen.

But the students say until their needs are met, they will not leave the school.

“We have paid dining hall fees; we will stay, eat the food from the school’s dining hall and write the exams before we leave,” one angry student said.
