Accra, Nov. 29 GNA - The Queenmothers Foundation of Ghana, an advocacy group formed to ensure the total development of women has launched a special package to award hardworking and dedicated midwives in the country.

The award is to appreciate the selfless and dedicated efforts of the midwives who as women have similar aspiration in terms of maternal health and infant mortality.

Nana Serwaa Bonsu I, Queenmother of Ofinso Kayera in the Ashanti Region, and President of the foundation, at the launch in Accra expressed happiness at the significant reduction of maternal death and infant mortality due to efforts of the Ghana Health Services and the hardworking midwives in the country.

She said the foundation seeks to ensure effective advocacy on women and children right, consensus and peace building, good governance and grassroots participation of women.

''The mission of the foundation is also to establish a society in which the women and children will be motivated to achieve their maximum potentials for their development, 'she said.

She said: 'It is important to remind ourselves as queenmothers that our duty for protection consists of not only taking care of our children but also preventing all acts of abuse violence against children.

Nana Bonsu enumerated a number of initiatives the foundation had undertaken such as, donations to the aged, orphans, widows, persons with disabilities and advocacy on good sanitation.

She appealed to other non- governmental organisations to support the foundation, identify and award the hardworking midwives, adding: ''It is our prayer that no woman will die while giving birth.''
