The Dunkwa-On-Offin Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Upper Denkira Municipality has held its 6th matriculation ceremony to officially welcome fresh men and women into the college.

Only six hundred and eighty-four applicants were fortunate to be admitted into the college to pursue programmes in Health Assistant Clinical, Registered General Nursing, and Registered Midwifery.

In his welcome address, the principal of the college, Mr. David Benjamin Sampson, revealed that about three thousand, five hundred and ninety-one (3,591) applications were received for the 2015/2016 academic year. Three thousand, five hundred and eighty-three (3583) candidates applied during the 2014/2015 academic year.

“This implies that, although we considered merit, those of you who were lucky to be admitted are privileged” he told the students. He went on to advise them to “make good use of the opportunity given to you to study very hard to accomplish the objectives of your training and abide by the rules and regulations of the college”.

Mr. Benjamin Sampson further urged the matriculants to always employ dialogue to make their grievances known to the officials of the college. “If you are faced with any challenges, resorting to unnecessary demonstrations and unapproved means is counter-productive” he said.

Despite faced with some challenges, the principal mentioned some achievements chalked by the college which include the completion of a three floor lecture block. A one hundred and seventeen capacity hostel facility has also been completed and it is currently being used by students.

“Two larger separate skills laboratories each for midwifery and general nursing as well as tutor’s offices are under construction to facilitate academic work and also to ease congestion” he added.

The college is determined to overcome its challenges, which include the lack of a transformer to ensure regular supply of electricity, lack of a permanent kitchen, dining hall, and auditorium for college gathering. The college also faces security threats due to the absence of a fence wall.

Mr. Benjamin Sampson mentioned that practical measures are being taken and implemented to address the challenges faced by the college.

“Effort is being made by the college in collaboration with stakeholders to construct a state-of-the-art kitchen, dining hall and a two thousand (2,000) capacity auditorium for the college” he stated.

The college is also liaising with the appropriate authorities to find a lasting solution to the power fluctuation facing the college and appeals are made to the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Health Training Institution to support the college with its infrastructural development.

Shortly after the matriculation event a ground-breaking exercise was performed to start the construction of the 2,000 capacity auditorium. The principal appealed to all meaningful individuals and corporate bodies to extend helping hands to the college.

The Dunkwa-On-Offinhene, Nana Obeng Nuakoh III, in an interview praised the principal and staff of the college for their dedication and hardworking spirit, which has made the college an enviable institution sought after by many students.

He said the traditional authority will continue to offer all the necessary help to expand the college and make it more competitive.
