Kumasi Nov. 28, GNA - S-Class Service, a private Vehicle Inspection and Technical Organisation, has opened a new branch in Kumasi to serve the Garden City and its surrounding districts.

The organisation is mandated by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to check the road worthiness of vehicles, as part of efforts and measures by the DVLA to reduce road crashes in the country.

In a media briefing after a 30 minutes tour of the facility on Friday, Mr Samuel Oppong, Chief Executives Officer (CEO) of S-Class Services revealed that the purpose of inspecting and testing vehicles is to ensure road worthiness, and to facilitate the safety of drivers and passengers.

He said the inspection process includes identification, payment for test, registry, visual and automated testing, printing and certification and road worthy certificate.

Mr Oppong said the visual test comprises windscreen, tyre, wipers, wheel knots and bolts, seat belt, number plates and seats while the automated test is made up of emission test, alignment, shock absorbers, front, rear and rear brakes test and the lighting system.

He said the organisation, which started operations in Accra three years ago, saw the need of extending the good work of the S-Class Services company to Ashanti Region and its environs: 'Another branch is ready awaiting approval from the Ministry of Transport DVLA to be opened in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.'

'So far the Accra testing Centre has tested over tested over 100,000 vehicles since its inception.'

Mr Oppong said about 70 per cent of vehicles that ply the country roads are not roadworthy and this has led to many accidents.

He said the testing has drastically reduced road crashes since the organisation does not compromise on standards.

The CEO said the operations in Accra has also reduced congestion and eased the pressure on the DVLA office at the 37 Military Hospital area, where vehicles are tested and licensed.

He expressed the hope that S-Class Services would extend its operations to the other regions in the northern sector as their services are needed in all parts of the country.

Mr Oppong appealed to government to encourage the opening of more of such facilities through public-private partnership, which he said, is key to economic development and protection of lives and property.
