Series on abuse of women launched

Accra, Nov. 28, GNA - A drama series, 'Breaking the Silence' aimed at reducing abuse churned at women in the country, was launched in Accra on Friday.

The 87 minutes series was written, directed and produced by Communiscape media for development.

Mr Norman Amidu, Executive Director, Communiscape media for development, producers of the series said it was developed to portray the numerous and inhumane vices women experience in their daily activities.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the launch, Mr Amidu observed that he project came about as a result of a research carried out by himself.

'Through this research I discovered abuse against women was high especially in Africa hence putting this series together to educate,' he said.

He noted that though it is disheartening to see what women go through in hands of people especially men, the series also entertains.

On the title, Mr Amidu indicated that it would help talk about issues affecting women.

He urged women to speak on issues confronting them as well as hindering their development.

He also called for women education saying that would make Africa develop.

'Women have a large role in development, so when all these abuses stop and they are allowed to operate equally as their male counterparts, and recognised, Africa will develop extensively,' he said.

Mr Amidu also appealed to the public to respect women, as respecting them also promoted tolerance of varied views.

Maame Afia Konadu, seasoned Broadcast Journalist, Peace FM, lauded Communiscape media for development and Young Heart Foundation for a series that created awareness on gender issues through the drama series.

She said the promotion of women issues is not for government only; rather a collective responsibility.

Maame Konadu, therefore called for partnership efforts among stakeholders that would empower women and children by giving them maximum projection.

'We must make all developing projects cover all people,' she said.

She entreated all to be ambassadors of the differently abled persons, women, children and the youth in the country.

'Let us care and empower a lot of people, the youth and women to the country's development, she said.

Maame Konadu however expressed concern at how women are not represented very well in the developmental roles of the country.

Mr Francis, Xavier Sosu, a Human Rights Lawyer, encouraged women to report all harassments they face in their everyday life to the appropriate authorities.

He urged the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice to sit up and perform as they had been mandated.

The drama series would be shown at 1700 hours in Accra on Saturday, November 28 at Arts Centre.
