Anglogold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine Donates Towards 2015 Farmer’s Day

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine has donated towards this year’s National Farmer’s Day celebration for the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly. The donation represents the full prize award for the Best Female Farmers in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.

The items include packets of roofing sheets, orthopedic mattresses, sowing machines, shovels, two sets of 32” plasma color television, wax prints, pairs of wellington boots, four bags of fertilizers, machetes, spraying machines, sound systems, amongst others.

At a ceremony at the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly, Senior Manager-Sustainability of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo said the donation forms part of the Mine’s Local Economic Development and Gender Empowerment Initiative which seeks to encourage more women into agriculture as a business. According to him, since the mine rolled out the initiative four years ago (the support of best female farmer) at the District level, more women have been motivated to venture into agriculture as business

“The sponsorship forms part of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine’s support to farmers and to help promote women empowerment in its catchment area. He commended the Mine for empowering over seven hundred farmers in its host communities and for sponsoring the award prize for best women farmer during Farmer’s Day. Since its institution, more women in the area have ventured into agriculture making the vocation attractive”.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Co-ordinatior of the Assembly, Mr. Peter Thompson congratulated the Iduapriem Mine for demonstrating high level of commitment towards agricultural development. He called on other organizations within the municipality to emulate Iduapriem Mine’s gesture.

Similar donation will also be presented to the Prestea-Huni Valley District Assembly for the award of best female farmer in the district.

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine in 2009 single-handedly hosted the celebration of the Regional and Municipal Farmer’s Day celebration at Adeiyie a host community of the Mine. In 2013 and 2014, the Prestea Huni-Valley and the Tarkwa District Assemblies respectively honored the mine with a citation for their immense contributions towards the celebration.
