Chief Arrested Over Antoa Robbery
27.11.2015 LISTEN

THE ANTOA police have arrested a chief in the town in connection with the stolen crown jewels from the Antoa Palace near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

DSP Adu Boahen, Kenyasi District Police Commander, did not mention the name of the said traditional ruler, perhaps for security reasons.

He, however, explained that the police apprehended the chief based on the fact he (chief) was in-charge of the stolen items.

DSP Boahen disclosed that five other inhabitants of the house where the stolen jewels were being kept had also been nabbed.

The police capo indicated to newsmen that the chief and the five persons had been granted police inquiry bail.

He said the chiefs at Antoa reported to the police that some people had broken into a room in the palace and made away with crown jewels.

According to him, the theft occurred in a sacred room on November 17, this year.

The police, he said, visited the palace to ascertain the havoc caused, and then started with investigations.

DSP Boahen said the street value of the stolen jewels was not known to the police, adding that the culprits had not been arrested yet.

The Kenyasi District Police Commander gave the assurance that his outfit would do everything humanly possible to arrest the robbers.

Meanwhile, chiefs at Antoa have debunked media reports that the stolen jewels were being kept at the premises of the dreaded Antoa Nyama deity.

A chief in the town, who demanded anonymity, told DAILY GUIDE that the items belong to the Antoa stool and not the river deity.

The chief said some rituals had been performed in the Antoa shrine, geared towards arresting the people who stole the jewels.

There are reports that the chiefs of Antoa visited the Manhyia Palace on Thursday to officially inform the Asnatehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, about the theft.
